Probably the ways in which some of the smaller teams got the money they needed in order to compete. Some of them were rather sketchy.

I think the worst example was one team that got its money from a Belgian fraudster, who claimed he'd built a computer that could predict stock market fluctuations. Of course, there was no such computer, and the whole thing was a massive pyramid scheme >_< .
