To my knowledge, Columbus barely seems to have fought in battles and sailors generally don't wear much armor.

Also, I really hate Columbus for his crimes against the indigenous Arawak people. He doesn't deserve a holiday. Wallace did undoubtedly kill his fair share of people but he wasn't as bad as Columbus. Not by a long shot.
